One Block Wonder

This is hard!!  I'm having tough time trying to figure out the block placement.  I know there's no right or wrong, but there's a better or worse.  I m trying to get a feel for it, but it's NOT easy (at least for me.)  It's taken me all morning just to get this far.  Thank goodness I have another week before the next class.  I'll probably spend most of it "tweaking" the block placement.

Wish me luck.  I really, really need it.

One Block Wonder

Yesterday, I attended the first of a two-part class in the One Block Wonder quilt.  There were five of us in the class and I'd attended other quilt classes with three of them so we had lots of catching up to do.

For this class, I chose an Asian print that had a 23 1/2-inch pattern repeat.

We needed a total of 6 repeats to make the hexagons.  After spending LOTS of time to make sure each layer was pinned as exactly as we could get it on top of each other, we cut 3 3/4-inch strips first along one selvedge side until we got close to the center fold.  Then we cut strips in the other direction, perpendicular to the selvedge edge.  The reasoning was that we would have less chance of blocks being too similar to others.

After cutting the strips, then we started cutting through the six identical layers into 3 3/4-inch triangles.

It looks like I've got enough fabric for 90 blocks (hexagons).  So far, I've got about half of them sewn.  A few sample blocks:

In two weeks, we spend the class arranging all these blocks into some sort of design. That ought to be very interesting considering the fact that I have ZERO imagination!  Wish me luck....
